Amphastar Tops Earnings Estimates Despite Revenue Miss and Decline in Profitability
Amphastar Pharmaceuticals reported net revenues of $170.5 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025. This is below the consensus estimate of $174.35 million and down 1% from $171.8 million in the same period last year.
Earnings per share came in at $0.74, exceeding analyst expectations by $0.05. Net income was $25.3 million, or $0.51 per share, compared to $43.2 million, or $0.81 per share, a year ago. Gross profit was $85.3 million with a margin of 50%, down from 52.4% last year, impacted by pricing pressure on epinephrine and higher labor costs. Operating cash flow totaled $35.1 million. Adjusted net income for the quarter was $36.9 million, compared to $55.3 million in Q1 2024.
BAQSIMI® led Amphastar’s product growth, generating $38.4 million in sales—a 177% year-over-year increase—following the assumption of global distribution. BAQSIMI® is designed to treat severe hypoglycemia—an acute and potentially life-threatening drop in blood glucose levels—in people with diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 37 million Americans have diabetes, and roughly 7 million of them use insulin, putting them at direct risk for severe hypoglycemic events.
Clinical studies and real-world data suggest that among insulin users, 20% to 40% may experience at least one severe hypoglycemic episode annually. That translates to approximately 1.4 to 2.8 million people in the U.S. each year who could potentially benefit from an emergency rescue treatment like BAQSIMI®.
Product revenues rose 8% year-over-year, though overall net revenues decreased due to the absence of $14.2 million in transitional revenue from BAQSIMI® recorded in Q1 2024. Selling, distribution, and marketing expenses increased 27%, while R&D expenses rose 18% to $20.1 million, driven by expanded clinical activities and FDA filing costs. Amphastar’s pipeline includes multiple biosimilar and proprietary candidates targeting market segments worth over $10 billion in aggregate.
