AMD Expands AI Ecosystem with New Platform Launch and a Crusoe Deal

At its 2025 Advancing AI event, AMD presented an expanded AI infrastructure roadmap, highlighting a full-stack offering that spans GPUs, CPUs, networking, and software.

AMD introduced the Instinct™ MI350 Series accelerators, which include the MI350X and MI355X models. These chips deliver a 4x increase in AI compute performance and a 35x improvement in inference over the previous generation. AMD also stated the MI350 Series achieved a 38x energy efficiency improvement in AI training compared to its 2020 baseline, exceeding its original five-year target of 30x.

Looking ahead, AMD set a new goal of improving rack-scale energy efficiency by 20x from 2024 to 2030. The upcoming “Helios” rack will integrate next-generation MI400 GPUs, which are expected to deliver up to 10x higher inference performance on Mixture of Experts models compared to the MI300 generation. AMD’s ROCm 7 software update adds expanded framework support and tools to support large-scale AI deployment.

Several partners discussed their current AMD deployments and future plans. Meta uses the MI300X to run Llama 3 and Llama 4 inference workloads and is evaluating MI350 for higher compute density and improved total cost of ownership. OpenAI confirmed use of MI300X for GPT models in production on Azure and is engaged in joint development around MI400. Microsoft and Cohere both run inference on MI300X chips, while Oracle Cloud Infrastructure plans to offer AI clusters using up to 131,072 MI355X GPUs.

Separately, cloud infrastructure startup Crusoe announced it will purchase approximately 13,000 MI355X chips from AMD, totaling an estimated $400 million. The GPUs will be deployed in a liquid-cooled data center in the U.S. set to open in fall 2025. The single-site facility will be capable of supporting multiple tenants or one large-scale user.
