Tesla Reports Record China Sales Amid Global Delivery Challenges

Tesla’s fourth-quarter 2024 performance delivered 495,570 vehicles. This sets a quarterly record but missing Wall Street’s consensus estimate by 10,000 units and its own implied target by 20,000.

While aggressive discounting, including 0% financing and lease buyout options, aimed to boost U.S. sales, these measures proved insufficient to counterbalance the impact of declining European subsidies and intense competition from Chinese automaker BYD. Globally, Tesla’s 2024 deliveries declined by 1.1%, marking the first annual drop. Exports from its Shanghai plant dropped 24% amid new EU tariffs and subsidy investigations.

In contrast, Tesla’s sales in China surged 8.8% year-over-year to a record 657,000 units, representing 36.7% of its global sales. December alone saw 83,000 vehicles sold domestically in China, a 12.8% increase month-over-month. However, full-year sales of China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, including exports, fell 3.3% due to weaker demand in Europe and other regions.

Tesla’s global market leadership remained narrow, delivering 1.79 million vehicles compared to BYD’s 1.76 million, as BYD’s global sales grew by 12.1%. Analysts are divided on Tesla’s outlook, with Wedbush’s Dan Ives maintaining a $515 price target based on anticipated innovations in AI, autonomy, and energy storage, while TD Cowen’s Jeff Osborne remains cautious with a $180 target, highlighting execution risks.

Netflix’s Push Into Live Sports Faces Investor Skepticism Amid Valuation Concerns

Netflix is set to increase its presence in the sports broadcasting market, beginning January 6, with its first live wrestling broadcast of WWE’s Monday Night Raw. This move comes after securing a 10-year, $5 billion deal in January 2024 for the rights to the weekly show.

Netflix also made efforts in live sports, including broadcasting two NFL games on Christmas Day and a high-profile boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson in November.

Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould raised his target to $950 from $800 but downgraded his rating to Hold, citing valuation concerns. Despite the return of popular shows like Squid Game—which racked up 68 million views during its season 2 premiere week. Analysts caution that the combination of high inflation and interest rates has made the stock appear vulnerable, suggesting that Netflix’s live sports push may not be enough to spark share price growth in the near future.
