Starbucks Denies Full Sale of China Operations Amid Reports of Stake Evaluation

Starbucks has clarified it is not currently considering a full sale of its China business, following a report by Chinese financial magazine Caixin that suggested otherwise. A company spokesperson stated, “I can confirm Starbucks is not currently considering a full sale of its China operations,” pushing back on claims that Starbucks had initiated a broad divestment.

According to Caixin, Starbucks began a formal process in May to gauge interest, distributing questionnaires to interested parties with inquiries covering topics such as corporate culture, sustainability practices, employee treatment, and potential transaction structures. Goldman Sachs is advising Starbucks in its evaluation process, though no decision has been made on whether to pursue a controlling or minority stake.

More than 20 institutions including private equity firms such as KKR & Co., FountainVest Partners, and PAG, according to Reuters have reportedly expressed interest. The discussions come amid mounting competitive pressure in China’s coffee market. With coffee prices from rivals such as Luckin and Cotti sometimes dropping below $0.7 per cup through subsidized delivery channels, Starbucks’ standard pricing of approximately $4.2 per cup has come under scrutiny.

In response to shifting consumer behavior and price sensitivity, Starbucks announced its first-ever price reduction in China earlier this month, lowering the cost of select non-coffee iced beverages by an average of $0.69. In 2023, Starbucks opened its $209 million Coffee Innovation Park in Kunshan.
